What is chemical etching?

Chemical etching is a non-contact, subtractive process wherein a metal surface is coated with a protective photoresist layer, selectively exposed to define a pattern, and then immersed in a chemical etchant. The unprotected areas of metal dissolve systematically, leaving behind precise shapes, patterns, or textures without mechanical stress, heat damage, or burrs.

This unique method enables the production of ultra-fine features with exceptional accuracy, repeatability, and surface finish. It is widely preferred for parts that require complex geometries, tight tolerances, and high repeatability that other machining methods may struggle to achieve.

How Does the Chemical Etching Process Work?

  • Preparation: The metal sheet or part is cleaned and coated with a light-sensitive photoresist.
  • Imaging: The desired pattern or design is transferred to the photoresist by UV exposure or direct imaging.
  • Developing: The unexposed photoresist is washed away, exposing the metal beneath.
  • Etching: The part is immersed or sprayed with a temperature-controlled chemical etchant (such as ferric chloride or nitric acid) which dissolves the exposed metal areas.
  • Stripping & Finishing: The remaining photoresist is removed, and the etched part undergoes cleaning and any further finishing.
  • This chemical milling, or "photo etching," guarantees high dimensional accuracy and surface integrity without tool wear or heat-affected zones.

    Advantages of Chemical Etching

  • High Precision & Complex Detail: Ideal for intricate designs and micro-patterns.
  • No Mechanical Stress: Parts are free of burrs, warping, or tool marks common in stamping or laser cutting.
  • Cost-Effective for High Volumes: Faster setup and repeatability reduce costs for large batch production.
  • Material Versatility: Applicable to stainless steel, copper, aluminum, brass, titanium, and more.
  • Preserves Material Properties: No heat distortion or grain structure changes.
  • Environmentally Controlled: Process parameters such as temperature, chemical concentration, and exposure time ensure consistent results.
  • Industrial Applications

  • Electronics: Printed circuit boards (PCBs), microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), semiconductor fabrication.
  • Aerospace: Lightweight components, fuel cells, heat exchangers, shims, and spacers.
  • Medical Devices: Surgical tools, implants, microfluidic devices, and diagnostic instruments.
  • Automotive: Engine parts, fuel injectors, and corrosion-resistant components.
  • Industrial Components & Decorative Metalwork: Filters, screens, nameplates, branding, and awards.
